add. Human Rights – Part 2

Human Rights-Part2

Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

The positive side of my previous article is about a child I used to take care of.

I was teaching English in an integration-school, a school for children with disabilities and so called normal children. I was teaching non English speaking children their first foreign language, as these children – between 5 and 10 years old – are living in a German speaking country. Like everything I do I had to corrupt the system by not teaching them children songs but songs that were on the radio so they could sing along when it is on. It was the time that Katie Melua was heard on the radio pretty often, so I taught them the song called “Spider’s web”. The first two paragraphs were the following:

If a black man is racist, is it okay?
When it’s the white man’s racism that made him that way,
Because the bully’s the victim they say,
By some sense they’re all the same.

Because the line between,
Wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread,
From a spider’s web.
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.

I translated the text to the class; they were really enthusiastic about the entire issue. I told the children to listen to the lyrics and tell me what they think about it, what they think it means. For all long time you could hear their little brains working. There were thoughts flying around the room like birds made of paper. All of a sudden a girl aged 6 got up and said: “I know it.” So I asked her to tell me what she found out about the text and she gave me a wonderful example. She said: “Mommy is pregnant and she will have a baby soon. I don’t know what it will be; I would really like to have a little sister so I could play with my dolls with her.” I said: “I am sorry but I don’t get the point” and she answered with this soft child’s voice:” But if God gives me a little brother it would all be good too because all that matters is, he will be my brother.”

This little girl forgot all the different colours; she ignored the black she just saw the love no matter what comes. I don’t know whether I could make myself clear enough but let it enter your heart and you will hear the voice inside you, speaking in this little girls tongue.

Funny enough for this paragraph I know thousands of stories, like for all articles concerning “The Declaration of Human Rights”. The strange thing though is that most of them were created in a child’s head if I have to think about any experience with similar intensity, when it comes to adults I can’t think of even one unless I saw it in a movie. So it was artists creating them and as everybody knows artists don’t let “the child inside” die because it is their source of creativity.

Let us change the arduous path we climbed to become “adults” and hand the new generations a world full of love, joy and happiness over.

  1. Sadly enough this picture is showing a newborn that is dreaming over and over again about the stress its mother had to take while labor or the month before. 85 babies out of 100 born in asylum suffer this syndrome. Great picture but terrible fact!
